DeafBlind Interpreting INstitute 2018

Participants: Login to DBI Moodle
A man and two women having a conversation using protactile ASL
For those who work in communities with greater concentrations of DeafBlind individuals, DBI is offering a limited number of small, onsite trainings. During these trainings, participants will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with DeafBlind trainers and experienced interpreters, and will hone their protactile interpreting skills. Participants are considered based on geographic area and proximity to a local DeafBlind community, as well as their opportunity for further induction experiences beyond the onsite training. Each cohort will also become a post-training community of practice, sharing their newly-applied skills and resources in an online format.

This training will be led by DeafBlind educators and mentors.  The expectation is to maintain a fully-immersive ASL and PTASL environment for all professional and social communication and interaction.

DBI is committed to training more interpreters in the language and culture of the DeafBlind community, while providing a respectful learning environment. This training experience presents a unique opportunity for valuable feedback to participants as they grow their PTASL skills. Feedback will include opportunities for both affirming and assertive critique from DeafBlind educators and mentors as well as from more seasoned interpreters who work with the DeafBlind community.

The 2018 cohort application period has closed. Thank you for your interest! Check back later for other opportunities. If you have any questions, please contact us at [email protected].

Protactile Language Interpreting National Education Program strives to be a culturally-responsive program. To that end, PLI is committed to continuous improvement and welcomes feedback related to your experience.
